The currently untitled new CD/DVD project is an exciting collection of three trios.  Two of them are acoustic works for somewhat unique instrumental ensembles.  An older trio for bass clarinet, contrabass, and celeste, entitled "Portrait of Two Idiots: Randall Terry and Jesse Helms; Senseless Babble with Fascist  Overtones"  (1990/1991) will be included, as well as a new work for viola, English horn, and bassoon.  This work, known by it's mildly unwieldy title, "Theme, variations, a digression, some completely unrelated material, and 3 Haiku - not necessarily in that order - for viola, English horn, and bassoon", also contains text by my good friend, poet Ruth Paterson.  The former is scheduled for an early Spring recording.  It has been performed in Los Angeles, as part of American Music Week, as well as at June In Buffalo, many moons ago.  The latter, written for my daughter, Jessica Elise Mantel (violist) was recently recorded in Charlotte, NC, after a wonderful premiere performance at the CPCC Artsfest, 2008

The centerpiece of the CD/DVD is the work 3 Trios in 5 Acts.  This work of course, is rather a meta trio, as the description of the work would imply.  The piece will be adapted for a site-specific performance in Milwaukee sometime in the near future.  The shooting schedule for the video is currently being planned.  The work is being re-scored, retaining a certain amount of the improvisation included in the original performance, while using some previously improvised sections as a blueprint for a more through composed work.

Machine Gun 7.23.11    Sketches from the Machine Gun Concerto is, hopefully, the first of a number of ‘views’ of a double concerto for harpsichord, contrabass and chamber orchestra, that will grace the Milwaukee area in the future.  These ‘views’ will utilize various media and performance scenaria in order to uncover hidden musical and metaphorical angles.  The works takes as it’s point of departure the melodic line of the inimitable Machine Gun, by Jimi Hendrix.

Join performers Rachel Icenogle, Alex Stewart, Cindy Covelli, Victor DeLorenzo, Jason Wietlispach, Janet Schiff, and Steven White (with more to come) as well as video artists Scott Johnson and Melissa Musante, and art activist Valerie J. Christell at the Translator Lab on July 23rd, 2011.  The room will activate at 7:00 P.M., and the performance will begin at 8:00 P.M.  The Translator Lab is located at 415 E. Menomonee Street.
